I finished Gachiakuta a few months ago and really enjoyed the story. It follows Rudo, a boy who is thrown into a massive trash pit after being falsely accused of murdering his adoptive father.

The anime gained significant traction in 2025. It even became Crunchyroll’s most-watched anime in July 2025, showing just how strongly audiences connected with it.

If you’ve finished Season 1, you know exactly why people are excited for what’s next. The finale completely changed what we thought we knew about the story. It revealed major information about Rudo’s bloodline, Canis Surebrec, the Watchman Series, and the mural in Canvas Town.

There is a lot to unpack, and Season 2 cannot come soon enough.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Gachiakuta Season 1 and manga chapters beyond the anime.

Possible Release Date for Season 2

Gachiakuta Season 2 could release between October 2026 to January 2027.

Season 2 was officially confirmed on December 21, 2025, the same day the Season 1 finale aired. Studio Bones Film will return to animate the second season.

To estimate a release window, we can look at Bones’ previous productions:

• Mob Psycho 100 Season 1 – July 2016
• Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 – January 2019
• My Hero Academia – roughly annual releases with 11-month gaps

The Mob Psycho 100 comparison is particularly relevant because, like Gachiakuta, it is a visually demanding action series that Bones treats as a flagship project. The difference is that Gachiakuta has over 100 manga chapters available, meaning there is no shortage of source material.

Bones Film also finished My Hero Academia Season 8 in December 2025, the same month Gachiakuta ended. With both major productions completed, the studio has more capacity to focus on Season 2.

Based on Bones Film’s typical production timeline of 12 to 18 months for a full season, a Winter 2027 premiere appears to be the safer prediction. A late 2026 release is still possible.

Gachiakuta Season 1 Recap

Before diving into the lore, here’s a quick recap of Season 1.

The World

Gachiakuta takes place in a society divided into two worlds.

The Sphere is a massive floating city inhabited by a privileged upper class. The people there consume endlessly and discard anything they no longer need.

Their trash falls to the Ground, often called “the Pit” by Spherites. The Ground is covered in mountains of garbage that accumulate negative emotional energy known as Anima.

Over time, this energy transforms discarded objects into dangerous monsters called Trash Beasts. The people living below are forced to survive in a giant landfill that occasionally comes to life and attacks them.

Separating the two worlds is the Border, a deadly space between cloud layers that almost nobody crosses alive.

Rudo’s Story

Rudo Surebrec is a teenager raised in the Sphere’s slums by his adoptive father, Regto.

As a child, he suffered abuse from his biological father, leaving scars on his hands that Regto later covered with a pair of gloves. Although Rudo is already looked down upon as a Tribesfolk descendant, Regto and his childhood friend Chiwa give him reasons to keep moving forward.

Everything changes when Regto is murdered and Rudo is framed for the crime.

The authorities throw him into the Pit, where he discovers that his gloves are actually a Vital Instrument. The gloves allow him to channel Anima and transform discarded objects into powerful weapons.

He is recruited by the Cleaners, an organization of Givers who protect people from Trash Beasts.

Throughout the season, Rudo develops a deep hatred for the Sphere while forming strong bonds with the Cleaners. He battles Raiders, survives countless dangerous encounters, and slowly realizes that the Ground feels more like home than the Sphere ever did.

What Are Vital Instruments?

Before discussing the Watchman Series, it helps to understand the power system.

Vital Instruments, also known as Jinki, are objects infused with Anima. Givers can channel emotional energy into objects, awakening them into weapons with unique abilities.

The longer a person cherishes an object, the stronger it becomes.

Think of it as an object absorbing the experiences, emotions, and memories of its owner. Rudo’s gloves became powerful because they were tied to Regto’s love and Rudo’s personal struggles.

Not everyone can become a Giver. It usually requires genuine emotional attachment to an object over a long period of time.

The Watchman Series Explained

The Watchman Series is a collection of ancient Vital Instruments unlike any others in the world.

These are the oldest known Vital Instruments, dating back at least six generations. Unlike ordinary Jinki, each possesses an effectively limitless supply of Anima.

However, they can only be safely used by emotionally broken individuals.

The overwhelming amount of Anima drives mentally stable users insane. Only those who have endured immense suffering appear capable of wielding them without losing control.

Their abilities seem connected to the five senses.

• Gloves (Touch) currently held by Rydo Surebrec which turns discarded objects into Vital Instruments and can empower up to three at once or focus all power into one for 3x strength.
• Boots (Smell) held by Amo Empool which produces scents of someone the opponent deeply loves, causing them to mistake the user for that person and fall into a sensory illusion
• Coat (Taste) held by Zodyl Typhon which mutates the user’s body based on what they eat, allowing them to grow appendages, wings, and other adaptations.
• Book (Sight) originally held by Regto and appears to be able to alter memories.
• Unknown (hearing) is believed to be connected to the Cleaner’s choker devices they use for communication.

Each item is grey and made of thick, heavy fabric with black patches, held together by belts that all meet at a metal ring bearing the Watchman Series logo.

Who Is the Watchman?

The Watchman is one of the greatest mysteries in Gachiakuta.

It resides within the Border between the Sphere and the Ground and appears as a massive humanoid figure with a skeletal frame and pitch-black skin.

Looking directly at the Watchman seems fatal. Noerde briefly saw it before her death, suggesting that witnessing its true form may have deadly consequences.

Its true nature, purpose, and connection to the Watchman Series remain unknown.

Because so few people survive crossing the Border, many fans believe the Watchman actively guards the space between worlds. This could explain why Rudo survived his fall from the Sphere while wearing the Watchman Series gloves.

Canis Surebrec: The Undertaker

Canis Surebrec, known as “The Undertaker,” lived six generations before the main story.

He was the best friend of Macaca Icol, the first Spellcaster of Canvas Town, and the original owner of every Watchman Series item.

Because he possessed the entire set, many believe Canis could freely travel through the Border between the Sphere and the Ground.

Before his death, Canis left a final message in Tori. He wrote that he had “failed to stop the humans” and could only “bury them.” He encouraged his descendants to live freely while he attempted to “break the chain.”

Eventually, Canis took his own life, though the exact reason remains unknown.

When Rudo and Enjin view Macaca Icol’s mural in Canvas Town, they learn that the Watchman symbol represents Canis Surebrec. Rudo then reveals his own surname, confirming his connection to the legendary figure.

If Canis lived on the Ground, how did Rudo’s bloodline end up in the Sphere?

The most likely explanation is that Canis used the Watchman Series to cross the Border, allowing his descendants to eventually settle in the Sphere.

The Other Key Characters

Alto Surebrec

Alto is Rudo’s biological father and the man believed to have caused his scars.

He was allegedly responsible for a killing spree before being thrown into the Pit. However, Enjin reveals that Alto once saved his life, gave him his name, and helped him discover his Vital Instrument.

Like Rudo, Alto may have been framed by the Sphere. His ability to cross the Border safely makes much more sense now that we know about the Surebrec bloodline.

Zodyl Typhon

Zodyl is the leader of the Raiders and the primary antagonist of Season 1. He wields Mishra, the Watchman Series coat, and seeks to collect every Watchman Series item in order to cross the Border and destroy the Sphere.

While he is correct that the Sphere is deeply corrupt, his methods are extreme.

Tamsy Caines

Tamsy initially appears to be a loyal Cleaner. However, the post-credit scene of Episode 24 reveals that he has imprisoned Amo. He is also shown to possess the Watchman Series book, which he stole from Regto.

Tamsy is further revealed to be the Angel, one of the few individuals capable of safely crossing the Border. His true motives remain unclear, but he is shaping up to be one of Season 2’s biggest threats.

Amo Empool

Amo is a Cleaner and the current owner of the Watchman Series boots. She is currently imprisoned by Tamsy, making her rescue one of the most important unresolved storylines heading into Season 2.

Arkha Corvus

Arkha is the mysterious leader of the Cleaners. He gives Rudo the personal mission of uncovering the world’s hidden truths. Following the revelations about Canis, Rudo has fully embraced his identity as “Rudo Surebrec the Cleaner.”

Where to Continue in the Manga?

Season 1 adapts the manga up to approximately Chapter 87.

Fans who want to continue the story can start reading from Chapter 88.

Upcoming story arcs likely to appear in Season 2 include the Information Broker Arc and the First Job Arc, where Rudo begins taking on independent Cleaner assignments.

Final Thoughts

Gachiakuta stands out because it is more than a simple revenge story. Beneath the action is a world filled with mythology, class conflict, hidden history, and unanswered mysteries.

Season 1 left us with major revelations about Canis Surebrec, the Watchman Series, and Tamsy’s betrayal, while the mystery of the Watchman remains unsolved.

If Studio Bones Film maintains the same level of animation quality, Season 2 could be even better than the first.
