To Your Eternity Review & Possible Season 4 Release: Why People are Starting to Lose Interest

7–10 minutes

I saw To Your Eternity (Fumetsu no Anata e) from a YouTube Short clip I watched, and then I started watching the series. It is one of the best series I have ever watched.

However, when you look at the MyAnimeList (MAL) ratings for the show, it is quite obvious that things started to fall off in Season 3. As of the time of this writing, Season 1 has an 8.35 score, Season 2 has an 8.11, and Season 3 has a 7.43, which is significantly lower.

It was really nice to watch, to be honest, seeing someone learn from scratch what it means to become human, learning about love, pain, and selfish thoughts such as wanting to live with someone forever. It is similar to why I like the game Detroit: Become Human so much, though I’ve never played it and have only watched full playthroughs of it.

I cannot wait for Season 4, and while it has not been announced yet, I am confident that it will come and wrap up the whole series.

Season 1-3 Recap of To Your Eternity

Season 1

Fushi is an immortal being made by a god whom they refer to as the “Man in Black” or “The Beholder.” Fushi is able to produce matter and copy animals and humans who have died and to whom Fushi has an emotional attachment.

Fushi starts as a pet wolf named Joaan belonging to a nameless boy in a deserted tundra environment. The boy dies, and Fushi acquires his body. He instantly heals from any pain and revives faster the more often he dies.

Eventually, he meets March, a small girl who was going to be sacrificed to the Spirit Bear, and gives her the name Fushi. Fushi tries rescuing March along with Parona, but March is killed by Hayase from the Yanome tribe.

Fushi eventually meets up with Pioran, an old lady who was imprisoned in Yanome. Along the way, they discover the Nokkers, alien-like tentacle creatures that can steal Fushi’s forms.

Pioran teaches Fushi how to speak, and they travel to Takunaha, where he meets her lover, Beer Gramps, and his adoptive son, Gugu, who scarred his face while trying to save a noble girl named Rean.

Gugu eventually dies saving Rean from the Nokkers, and Pioran and Fushi travel alone again as the Nokkers actively follow Fushi. They end up on a prison island, Janada. Fushi is able to meet companions such as Tonari and the crew, but loses them all except Tonari and Sandel in a fight against the Nokkers.

Hayase also returns, obsessed with Fushi, but Fushi leaves her alone to die at the hands of a Nokker.

Pioran eventually dies of old age and Alzheimer’s-like symptoms. Fushi is devastated and stays on the island for 40 years, defeating Nokkers by himself.

Season 2

The Nokkers stop attacking Fushi and start attacking innocent humans. Fushi is also rediscovered by the Yanome tribe. Hayase coexisted with the Nokker that was supposed to kill her and passed it down to her descendants.

Fushi reunites with Tonari and Sandel, realizing only after Tonari’s death that she was there. Fushi works with the descendants of the Yanome tribe but eventually works with Prince Bon Uralis, who can see the souls, or fye, of the dead. They are warned that the Renril Kingdom will be attacked by Nokkers, and Fushi starts rebuilding the whole city with roots attached so that he can feel and teleport everywhere.

Fushi also meets an immortal horse who is heavily implied to be the reincarnation of Pioran.

He works with Kai, Hairo, and Messar to fight the Nokkers and discovers that he can revive people as long as their fye willingly remains on Earth. He revives March, Gugu, Tonari, Bon, Ekko, Kai, Hairo, and Messar.

Fushi decides that he wants to spread his roots across the whole world and annihilate all remaining Nokkers. He goes to sleep for 600 years while the rest of the people he revived eventually die and wait for him as souls.

Season 3

Fushi successfully spreads his roots across the whole world, and the world appears to look like modern Japan. Fushi revives his friends again, and they live in Yuki’s house.

In this world, the Nokkers still exist but have evolved to microscopic levels, blending in with normal humans. Some Nokkers coexist with humans, coming out when a human experiences negative events, while others are Nokkers controlling the bodies of humans whose fye has already left the world.

Once again, Fushi comes across Mizuha, the descendant of Hayase, and she is unable to grasp the concept of love or identify whether he is talking to Mizuha or the Nokker that was passed on by Hayase, which is also able to revive. Mizuha, along with her family, is eventually rescued and revived by Fushi.

It is also revealed that The Beholder was a god who created everything and wanted to become a normal human, whereas he would forget and lose his powers after four years. Fushi rejects his offer to transfer his power to him.

The series ends with Yuki dying of old age. He was a firm believer in coexisting with Nokkers and becoming a renowned personality for developing Nokker-warding technology and spreading information about them. The series ends with all of Fushi’s allies willingly staying with Fushi as immortals.

Why People are Losing Interest

I think the main reasons people were losing interest were because there were a lot of changes in the new season.

  1. Nature of the Nokkers: How are the Nokkers in space? How were they able to reincarnate?
  2. Unexplained Things: I find some things strange, like how Fushi was able to recover when he was shot with “Nokker” bullets from Mizuha’s dad, who was possessed by a Nokker. How is Mizuha able to stay calm around all the blood and death, even when she is actually herself?

I totally get it. It is a new environment with new people, new mechanics, and changes to the enemies. However, I do agree that there are some things that feel like they were left unexplained or do not really make sense. Still, I believe it was wrapped up pretty nicely.

Season 4 Release Date Predictions

Season 3 ran from October 4, 2025, to March 28, 2026, so it is still relatively fresh after finishing.

Season 1 had 20 episodes and was handled by Brain’s Base studio, while Season 2 (20 episodes) and Season 3 (22 episodes) were handled by Drive Studio.

Season 1Apr 12, 2021 – Aug 30, 2021
Season 2Oct 23, 2022 – Mar 12, 2023
Season 3Oct 4, 2025 – Mar 28, 2026

While Season 4 has not been officially confirmed yet as of the time of this writing, based on the pattern we have seen, Season 4 will most likely come in Fall 2027 or 2028.

This means Season 4 will most likely come around October 2027 or October 2028.

Where to Continue in the Manga

You can continue reading the story at Volume 20, Chapter 166 for the Future Arc. The anime was really faithful to the adaptation, so you will not miss anything after continuing here.

The manga of this series has officially concluded at Chapter 201, Volume 25.

What Happens Next in the Story (Season 4)

The next part of the story is also known as the Future Arc, which enters a cyberpunk-style environment.

Society is now ruled by a powerful tech corporation called Kaibara Corp., originally founded through Yuki, which has integrated Nokkers into microchips. People receive artificial immortality and superpowers based on how many “stars” they earn through public likes.

The ruling system hunts down Fushi and his friends because they are natural immortals who do not rely on corporate chips.

Fushi eventually defeats the Nokkers by absorbing the power of The Beholder and absorbing the Nokkers themselves and literally altering their being so they do not evolve or reincarnate anymore.

He revives all his friends and grants them 300 years of life, and they finally live their lives to the fullest. They die of old age and no longer stay, their fye crosses into paradise, and Fushi just matures and accepts all of this.

Fushi finally understands why The Beholder told him that things that die are perfect to him. I like how, despite Fushi initially rejecting The Beholder’s offer, he becomes a god himself. Fushi travels through the cosmos and space, bringing all the Nokkers away from the world.

Final Thoughts

I really like anime that has different eras, from medieval to modern times. This is one of the few reasons I like JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure as well, because it goes from the 1800s timeline with Jonathan Joestar to the modern 2010s with Jolyne Kujo and even a world reset into this.

I think that ending is really beautiful. The Beholder was someone who created the world for fun and out of boredom, an empty shell that never really understood humanity. Meanwhile, Fushi started from nothing, learning what it means to become human through love, grief, and the willingness to protect others, ultimately sacrificing himself once again for everyone’s happiness. It is truly a bittersweet ending.
