Takopi’s Original Sin: The Problem With Wanting to Fix People

4–6 minutes

I recently finished watching Takopi’s Original Sin (Takopii no Genzai) on Netflix. It is a short mini-series with only six episodes.

At first glance, it feels like a Doraemon-style story. An alien tries to cheer up a bullied girl named Shizuka using magical gadgets from its home planet. But very quickly, the story turns much darker. It explores the struggles of young children dealing with neglect, pressure, and trauma from their families.

I had already heard that this anime was not what it seemed. Many people described it as dark and depressing, and they were absolutely right.

This anime left me reflecting on how real these problems are. Not just for children, but for people of all ages. Despite its heavy themes, it serves as a bittersweet reminder of why life is still worth living.

Full Recap

Shizuka’s Depressing Life

A small pink, octopus-like alien named Nuenukf, later nicknamed Takopi, comes from Happy Planet with the goal of spreading happiness on Earth.

Takopi meets Shizuka, a fourth-grade student who is constantly bullied by a classmate named Marina.

Shizuka lives with her mother after her parents separated. Her father now lives in Tokyo, while her mother is rarely home and works in a job that exposes Shizuka to more emotional distress. One of her mother’s clients is Marina’s father, which creates tension between both families.

Because of her unstable home life, Marina channels her anger into bullying Shizuka.

Shizuka’s only source of comfort is her dog, Chappy. One day, while walking her dog, Marina provokes Chappy into biting her. Marina then pretends to be the victim, leading to animal control taking Chappy away. This incident pushes Shizuka to take her own life.

Using one of his gadgets, a time-rewinding camera, Takopi resets time to prevent this tragedy. However, no matter what he tries, the same outcome keeps happening.

Takopi continues to encourage Shizuka to live, even when things seem hopeless.

Marina’s Death

As the bullying worsens, Takopi attempts to intervene. In the process, he accidentally kills Marina using the gadget.

The camera breaks, making it impossible to rewind time again.

Takopi and Shizuka try to cover up the incident. Using another gadget, they preserve Marina’s body, and Takopi disguises himself as her.

Shizuka becomes obsessed with escaping her life. She dreams of going to Tokyo to find her father and reunite with Chappy. She manipulates her classmate Naoki into taking the blame for Marina’s death.

However, when she finally confronts her father, she discovers that he has already moved on with a new family and rejects her.

Overwhelmed, Shizuka lashes out at Takopi.

The Flashback

Takopi later recalls that this was not his first time on Earth.

In a previous timeline, he met Marina first and helped improve her life. Her mother became kinder, and Marina eventually found happiness in high school with Naoki.

However, when Naoki became interested in Shizuka, Marina’s life spiraled again. This led to a tragic chain of events involving the death of her mom.

In an attempt to fix everything, Takopi goes back to his planet to reset time, losing his memories in the process.

Memories of Takopi (Ending)

In the present timeline, Takopi and Shizuka eventually forgive each other.

Takopi sacrifices himself to make the time-rewinding camera work one last time. He sends Shizuka back to the moment they first met.

This time, things change. Marina gradually stops bullying Shizuka, and although their memories of Takopi fade, they carry a faint sense of his presence.

By high school, Shizuka and Marina become friends, bringing the story to a quiet and hopeful ending.

What Takopi Teaches Us

Optimism Doesn’t Solve Problems

This anime delivers a powerful message about just how far optimism can go.

Takopi constantly tries to fix problems with positivity, but he fails to understand the depth of human emotions. He cannot fully grasp why people behave the way they do.

As viewers, we can clearly see the pain behind each character’s actions.

Real change requires empathy and understanding. Marina bullied Shizuka because of her own pain, while Shizuka suffered silently from neglect. If either of them had been understood earlier, things might have been different.

Never Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Naoki struggles under pressure from his mother to achieve perfect grades. He tries to handle everything on his own, unaware that his brother could have supported him.

Many of us do the same. We keep our problems to ourselves because we do not want to burden others or appear weak.

But with the right people, sharing your struggles can make things feel lighter.

Saying Goodbye Can Be Salvation

Takopi’s sacrifice shows that sometimes letting go leads to better outcomes. Even though Shizuka did not want to lose Takopi, staying in that timeline would have caused more harm to everyone involved.

In real life, letting go of unhealthy relationships or environments can be painful at first, but it can lead to long-term growth and peace.

Stop Trying to Fix People

In many ways, people are like Takopi. We try to fix others by giving advice or forcing solutions.

But sometimes, people do not need to be fixed. They just need someone to listen.

Understanding someone’s situation is more important than trying to solve it.

Final Thoughts

This is just my personal take on Takopi’s Original Sin.

It is a heavy but meaningful series that highlights how everyone is dealing with their own struggles. No matter how small or big, everyone carries something.

I would highly recommend this anime if you are looking for something emotional, thought-provoking, and different from typical lighthearted shows.
